Stage 2 is the second stage of sleep and lasts for approximately 20 minutes. The brain begins to produce bursts of rapid, rhythmic brain wave activity known as sleep spindles. Body temperature starts to decrease and heart rate begins to slow. According to the American Sleep Foundation, people spend approximately 50%...
A hypnogram is a diagram of the stages of sleep as they occur during a period of sleep. This hypnogram illustrates how an individual moves through the various stages of sleep.
The Sleep Cycle. There are two forms of sleep: REM and NREM. You dream during REM (rapid eye movement). It takes up 25% of your slumber, stretching into longer periods in the morning.
NORMAL SLEEP PATTERNS Introduction: In the normal adult there are two main stages of sleep that alternate at about 90 minute intervals. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep can be roughly described as a period when the brain is active and the body is paralyzed (except for eye movements, middle ear ossicles, and respiration).
A sleep cycle is the progression through the various stages of NREM sleep to REM sleep before beginning the progression again with NREM sleep. Typically, a person would begin a sleep cycle every 90 120 minutes resulting in four to five cycles per sleep time, or hours spent asleep.
When these stages are charted on a diagram, called a hypnogram (see Figure 2), the different levels resemble a drawing of a city skyline. Sleep experts call this pattern sleep architecture. In a young adult, normal sleep architecture usually consists of four or five alternating non REM and REM periods.
Back Sleepers. Pros: Snoozing in savasana pose is a boon for spine and neck health, because the back is straight and not forced into any contortions. Plus back sleeping helps the mattress do its ...
Each sleep stage in any particular sleep cycle fulfills a distinct physiological and neurological function, each of which appears to be necessary for the health of the body and mind, to the extent that, if sleep is interrupted or if certain stages are missing for any reason, their physiological functions are not fully executed, and the person may feel tired or groggy even after an apparently sufficient sleep period, a phenomenon known as “sleep inertia”.

This car is found only on the Coast Starlight. This lounge is for sleeping car passengers only. These cars were inherited from the Santa Fe railroad in 1971 when Amtrak took over passenger service. Technically, it is not a Superliner, it is considered Heritage equipment. Santa Fe called them Hi Levels.
